Barasa Lauds Outgoing Kenyatta University VC as He Earns PhD
Kakamega Governor Fernandes Barasa has commended the outgoing Kenyatta University Vice Chancellor, Professor Paul Wainaina, for his transformative leadership that has elevated the institution into one of the country’s leading public universities.
Speaking during a graduation ceremony at Kenyatta University, Governor Barasa said the institution experienced remarkable growth during the ten years it was under Professor Wainaina’s leadership, attributing the progress to his resilience, strategic vision, and commitment to academic excellence.
Professor Wainaina assumed office at a time when the university was grappling with financial constraints, infrastructural gaps, and rising student numbers. Under his leadership, Kenyatta University expanded its academic programs, strengthened research and innovation, and invested heavily in modern infrastructure to support teaching and learning.
During his tenure, the university rolled out new schools and postgraduate programs, enhanced digital learning systems, and increased collaborations with both local and international institutions. These reforms improved academic standards, boosted research output, and enhanced the university’s global visibility.
The institution also witnessed improved governance structures and better resource management, enabling it to stabilize financially while continuing to serve a growing student population. These efforts positioned Kenyatta University as a competitive hub for higher education and research in the region.
During the same ceremony, Governor Barasa was conferred with a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Public Policy and Management, a milestone he described as a reflection of the importance of education and evidence-based leadership in public service.
The Governor said the knowledge and skills acquired during his studies will be instrumental in strengthening policy formulation, governance, and service delivery in Kakamega County.
He reaffirmed his commitment to applying academic research and sound public policy principles to drive sustainable development and improve the lives of residents.
